Mr Hastings & St.Leonards

Pebble Designs collaborated with HVA, a local charity to help organise and conduct a 6-week workshop specifically for Men within the Hastings community as part of a 3 year funded project by Public Health England. The workshop aimed to assist HVA by creating a fresh identity for a movement around the topic Men’s Mental Health.

The 6 week course was held across multiple venues in Hastings. Week one, we started at the Board Game cafe. We had fun with games such as Hues and Cues and Ghost Blitz with the purpose that they all related back to colour theory, memory and perception. The next phase of the workshop was focused on discovery where we covered colour theory, iconography, sketching logos and researching successful (and failed) brands with an understanding of why.

The workshops were focused on the following:

Who is the target audience?

With any project, understanding the target audience is important. We used HVA’s collaborative group “The Champions” who’s focus was to reach out to the community through a variety of methods. My role was to relay the information, understand the group dynamics relating back to the data and helping the group see the creative opportunities.

Challenging the stereotypes // Defining the brand mission

“Men don’t talk”. This statement became more obvious the more we discussed; we need to create ways for men to start talking. Through other individuals who joined along with HVA’s research this information was fed directly into creating the mission for the new brand.

Industry practice

The tools and methods for creating a brand for a movement needed to be able to scale from the ground up. Pebble Designs provided the design rationale, challenge the ideas and guide on tools and techniques.

I felt quite emotional when I saw the branding design that we had created together, and it resonated with the journey we had all been on together
